Just because someone quotes a scholarly text, does not mean he knows what he is talking about.

They bank on the fact that the average Muslim highly respects classical scholarly sources (and rightly so). So they selectively cite from those sources, cherry picking and abridging as needed.

The red flag to look out for is when someone says something that contradicts everything you have ever heard on a subject. Realize that there are no new discoveries in Islam. No one is going to discover something unprecedented that everyone has been ignorant of for centuries.

  • ^ And for me it was to ensure that the Bengali translation was in fact literal translation of Arabic. You will be astonished to see how much an average translator adds from his own words or subtracts what he doesn't like from a translation.
