What's the thing with farmer's protest in India?

India had a 100 year old "protect the farmers" act which mandated that no farmer can sell their farm's product outside of the government controlled markets, called Mandi, and they must sell it above the government determined price.

You can't just sell your harvest from your home, from your field, to your neighbor or to an online buyer. Only through an auction in a Mandi.

Modi government wants to remove this law and bring it to open market. Farmers don't. Therefore the protests.
