TIL : All the mass of blackhole reside in a dimensionless point. It's not that the atoms are sticking in there with each other. Rather all the mass like 6 million suns reside in a single point smaller than a Planck distance.

And Planck length is the smallest distance a thing can move in. Sized at 10e-36 meters.

So when two blackholes merge, it's two such points merging. And the energy given up in the process radiates as gravitational energy. Which currently we know as "Gravitational wave".
