Another story that I enjoyed in the 90s. Tom Clancy's "The Cardinal of The Kremlin". The title revolves around US agents extracting a highly valuable secret agent from Soviet Russia. But I no longer remember that story line. Other than Russia burning their agents alive to death when caught. :-/
The other story line that I do remember, was US joining Afghan Mujahids arming them with Stinger missiles and instructing them with a mission to destroy a Russian research center in Afghanistan dedicated to developing laser weapons powerful enough to destroy incoming missiles or satellites. And the team more or less successfully carries on that mission.
Note that these books were from pre-Internet days. I no longer have the attention span to read though these huge volumes. :-)
