"The Hunt for Red October"
My first Tom Clancy book. Read it pre-95 too. Later read a bunch more of his works but this one was the first one. The details on military technology and techniques described in his books were stunning.
This one tells the story of a Russian submarine captain escaping the Iron Curtain to escape to the USA, with a secret and new Russian submarine. Specialty being the sub was too silent for getting detected by sonar sensors.
Later it was turned into a film, but didn't watch that. The book was amazing.
