Familiar scene from the 80s. These were shuttle carriers. The 747 picked up the shuttle from one place and dropped it at some other as required. As shuttles themselves couldn't fly like plane.
I don't know how they calculated the air dynamics of this complex formation. Or how they managed to land with this heavy load.
Anyway, memories. Those were the days.
