High resolution surface image of the sun, that has been taken recently. Of course the surface isn't solid, it's gas, or rather plasma, but still shows structure in it. The structures shown in picture are 1000 km wide.
Also note that the outer surface of the sun is hotter than the inner core. The opposite of what's the case for earth.
