Old timers like me should remember the Challenger explosion in 1986. That was the first rocket explosion I watched. Killed 9 persons, IIRC.
Today Space X has just performed a space test like the Challenger explosion to see if the astronauts can escape in those situations. Live video in comment.
They shot a rocket and exploded it mid flight to check if the dummy there can escape using a parachute. This is the first test before they start to put humans inside their rockets. Till now it had been all cargo.
And while we talk about the 80s, the other space accident at that time gave birth to The Six Million Dollar Man. News : that series is getting a remake, called The six billion dollar man -- blame inflation :-)
