Big shakeup in cosmology, there is no "dark energy" and the universe though is "expanding", isn't expanding at an *accelerated* rate.
The error was in measurement of luminosity of supernovas. The prior scientists assumed luminosity should remain the same. New scientists found that luminosity depends on galaxy age. When that's taken into consideration -- the whole acceleration part goes away.
This theory stood here for 20 years. Therefore "big rip" for the end of the universe is off the table. We most likely would face a big crunch, or heat death.
That was my take. In a few days we shall see more coverage on what this finding means as main stream news come up with more analysis.
