Gazzali said that excess number of islamic scholars create excess and unnecessarily deep religious debate within the muslim community. So muslims should rather focus more on STEM subjects [science and medicine] which they are generally lacking. Link in comment from brother Iftekhar Jamil.
Note that this goes in complete opposite to social norms of understanding.
Not to undermine the importance of scholars. But when an islamic scholar is struggling in the field and looking around hard to earn a living, learning tech and science helps both him personally and the muslim community as a whole.
