Musk says why the core failed to land : The re-entry caused too much heat that burnt the engine. The rocket willingly skipped the landing pad to save the pad from a direct hit, as its motion didn't get reduced enough in time.
BUT : wasn't its re-entry velocity and heat generation all pre-calculated and worked out at the design phase?
