A star going supernova.

This happens, in plain english, when all carbon [read coal] in a massively large star has burnt out, and most of coal has turn into iron.

Now this newly produced iron can't burn any further. Therefore its massive weight collapses into itself, causing a large nuclear chain reaction, and goes Boom! Destroying a part of the galaxy with it.
